YES, SALES TAX IS A REALITY FOR ECOMMERCE BUSINESS

For those new to sales tax, I know what you’re thinking. You think you don’t have to worry about sales tax when you sell online. You’ve bought products on eBay or Amazon, and the sellers didn’t charge you sales tax, so obviously sales tax must not apply.

Despite what some people believe, any business that sells taxable products needs to collect sales tax in the jurisdictions where they have nexus. What is nexus? It is where your business has a significant presence (offices, employees, sales reps, and property (including inventory)).  It doesn’t matter whether the business is online or brick and mortar. And it doesn’t matter if other people are following the rules or not. You should be aware that this is a liability issue for your business now.

A big challenge for an ecommerce business owner is managing sales tax compliance.  Understanding collection requirements, configuring your shopping cart or marketplace, managing the sales tax collected, and filing the returns is a complex and time consuming process.

To make matters worse, for Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) sellers, Amazon’s FBA service creates sales tax nexus for your business in the 22+ states where Amazon has warehouses. If you are an Amazon FBA seller and you’re making sales to customers in any of those locations, you should be registered, collecting, filing returns and remitting sales tax in each of those jurisdictions.  That can be a pretty big compliance headache.

Who will I work with and who has access to my books?

Our entire team consists of full-time US employees that work virtually from their homes. All employees have had background checks, and Catching Clouds has an actively monitored security policy.

You will be assigned an ecommerce accountant and controller who will work on your books and will get to know you and your business deeply. We do cross-train other accountants and/or controllers on your business so that our employees can go on vacation from time to time without disruption to the accounting for your business.

Do you offer training?

My books are a mess. Can you help?

Absolutely. Many of our customers began with books slightly (or massively) in disarray, and we have lots of experience setting up and cleaning up books.

However, keep in mind that we only provide cleanup and setup services to companies signed up for our ongoing monthly services. If you have a one-time cleanup project, reach out to us, and we may be able to refer you to another service.

I've seen other sites with pre-defined or three-priced package option. Do you offer that?

Nope. We treat our customers as the unique businesses they are. Don’t get me wrong, we love getting an easy price quote by checking on the website as much as the next guy, but unfortunately, the price for each customer really does depend.
